What are False Ceilings?

The idea of an ordinary plane ceiling alienates an individual from the space itself, a dull and tedious surface that doesn’t speak or reflect a volumes character or identity. With the development and invention of false ceilings, a person can now express his or hers aesthetic sense and embellish the beauty of any space whether it be an office, commercial complex, residential complex or theatres.

In Jordan, false ceilings have become a fundamental component in commercial and residential building designs. A multitude of companies and firms compete locally in false ceiling and partition installations, which made this product not just favorable among designers, but an imperative segment in interior fragmentation.

Types of False Ceilings

False ceilings can be considered as secondary ceilings that are hung below the main ceiling with the help of suspension cords or struts. They are also known as dropped ceilings or suspended ceilings.

There are diverse types of false ceiling, depending on the proposed design and the cost. Let’s start with most common type, gypsum board false ceiling. It’s the most commonly used false ceiling material. The panels come with either tapered or square edges. Gypsum boards can be easily fixed either by nailing directly to ply or other plain surfaces or placing on a galvanized iron (GI) metal grid. Then there’s grid false ceiling, one of the most common types of false ceilings used in commercial office spaces. These type of ceiling are suitable for large range of applications. They are ideal for concealed wiring. These metal ceiling panels are installed either on steel T- sections or cross sections and then suspended by rods.

Plaster of Paris (POP) is the most commonly used on a residential level, the purpose of it is completely aesthetic. It is the cheapest amongst all the false ceiling materials. POP is mixed with water and is applied to fiberboard or wood base which suspends to form the ceiling. It requires artistic workmanship. Moving on to plywood ceiling. Plywood ceilings are popular for their visually appealing aspects. These type of ceilings are created with strips of ply which are either nailed or glued together, mostly used for cold climates. And lastly we have PVC false ceiling. It solves the problem of cleaning and maintenance. This type of ceiling is suitable for all types of climate. It also incorporates flush fitting and hidden lighting system. These are one of the most hassle free and easy to install false ceilings.

Benefits of False Ceilings

Mainly, the general reason behind installing false ceilings is the aesthetic value of it, and how it compliments a space, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. False ceilings have numerous values and benefits. It can hide ducting and other structural elements that hinder the beauty of the room. Works as heat insulator, also as an acoustical barrier by reducing echo problems. (Especially in theatres, conference halls, auditorium etc.) Can act as an anti-microbial element (required specially in health care centers, hospitals and clinics). False ceiling can also act as a fire separator if the material used in making ceiling tiles are mineral fiber or fire rated wood panels.

False ceiling can be just a small component in the layers of space design, but its invention has opened various venues in the world of interior design and articulation. Here at Phi Contracting Co, we acknowledge the importance of this revelation, and we can help you understand it as well.
